Mars Takes Puppy Steps
Recently, Mars Inc. relaunched its natural pet food line Nutro, announcing that its dry food would now be made without GMOs (genetically modified organisms). The new product line aims to have “recipes that are simple, purposeful and trustworthy, made with real, recognizable, non-GMO ingredients as close to their native form as possible.” For the last year GMO Inside and thousands of consumers have been pushing Mars to remove GMOs from all of its pet and human food. Producing higher quality pet food free of GMOs is a great first step.
When we think of Mars we most often think of candy, but the company sell substantially more pet food then candy. Which means that Mars purchases huge quantities of corn and soy as well as beef and chicken, all of which are mostly produced with GMOs and related pesticides in the US. Any decrease in the use of GMOs is a step in the right direction. We would love to see Mars take similar steps with some of its larger, more recognized brands such as Iams, Pedigree, and Whiskas.
Nutro’s tag line “Clean is the New Standard,” suggesting that anything less than recognizable, non-GMO ingredients is below standard. But shouldn’t “clean” be the new standard for people too. While Mars has made commitments to remove artificial colors from all its human food products, the company has yet to make any progress on removing GMOs from human food. In 2015, the company’s top competitor, Hershey’s, committed to remove sugar sourced from genetically engineered sugar beets from its most iconic products. It is beyond time for Mars to clean-up its food products!
